20 Ways to save at the supermarket
-2-
[Read 1-10 here]
11. Don't Meander Around
You don't find staples such as milk, eggs and bread all
in the same aisle in supermarkets. The most
regularly bought items tend to be spaced around the
store, so we have to pass many other tempting goodies.
Have a list and stick to it.
12. Ask for a Raincheck
If something is advertised as being on special but the
store is sold out, ask the service desk if you can get a
raincheck on the product and buy it at the lower price
when they have restocked the item.
13. Keep Occupied in the
Queue
Children's lollies, chocolates and water are all placed
by the till. These are impulse buys, so when
you're bored with waiting, you're tempted. Get out
a book or make a call on your mobile to while away those
minutes.
14. Shop at Night.
If possible, get to the shops between 9pm and midnight,
when most markdowns occur. There are many items
reduced, such as cooked chicken, bread, juice, cakes,
cheese and fresh meats.
15. Check Use-by Dates
and Get a Markdown
Look at every use-by date on every item, and if there
are one or two days left, ask for a discount.
16. Shop Online
You won't be tempted to impulse buy, and you can keep
track of your spending. Plus, you won't spend an
hour of your life bribing the kids to behave! If
you go over budget, just delete non-essential items from
the list.
17 Look High and Low on
the Shelves
The most profitable stock for supermarkets is placed at
eye level (or at children's eye level, if it's targeted
at them.) But look at the higher and lower shelves
and you'll usually find the best deals.
18 Learn to Read The
Labels
Food has a longer shelf life than you may imagine.
Check the Use-By Guide to find out what labels really
mean.
19 Buy Generic
Over-the-Counter Medicines.
"In Australia we can be confident that generics and
branded pain-killers are the same and work in the same
way," says Judith Mackson of the National Prescribing
Service. "Just remember to check with your
pharmacist that whatever you've chosen will suit you,
your symptoms and your medical history." The only
difference? Price. A recent study by CHOICE
magazine found you'll save almost 50 percent on average
by switching to generic brands. Check with your GP
first.
20 Don't Make Multiple
Trips
Avoid going to the supermarket more than once a week.
You always spend more than you need there. When
you do go, have a list and stick to it.

Lemons Add Zest to Life
Lemon
trees
laden
with
their
winter
crop,
boughs
drooping
under
the
weight
of
many
hued
lemons:
dark
green,
lighter
green
becoming
suffused
with
yellow,
vibrant
yellow
bursting
with
life,
then
as
they
go
unpicked
and
overripe
a
flush
of
orange
seeps
into
the
knobbly
fruit.
Until
I
came
to
South
Africa
lemons
came
from
a
shop:
smooth,
uniform
yellow
skins
all
year
round.
Now
I
have
learned
to
appreciate
their
seasonal
bounty,
struggling
to
use
up
all
the
fruit
in
winter,
hoarding
away
the
squeezed
juice
of
the
excess
lemons
in
the
freezer
for
summer,
when
the
lemons
must
come
from
the
shop
again
and
are
more
expensive
and
less
juicy.
This
is
the

Anyone who has kids knows that any
life with kids is going to be
complicated, at least to some degree.
From extra laundry to bathing and
cooking and shopping and driving and
school and chores and crises and sports
and dance and toys and tantrums, there
is no shortage of complications.
You won’t get to ultra-simple if your
life includes children … but you can
find ways to simplify, no matter how
many kids you have.
