Human Rights
Right Here, Right Now: Teaching Citizenship through Human Rights
This resource on teaching human rights was developed by the
Ministry of Justice, United Kingdom (UK) and the British Institute
of Human Rights. There is teacher background section outlining
useful teaching techniques for dealing with controversial issues. It
has lesson plans using a human rights approach to teaching,
establishing school rules, and balancing the rights of different
groups. It covers issues such as homophobic bullying and child
poverty, and helps students to understand the background to human
rights laws and how they are protected (referring specifically to
the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child).
Whilst there is a focus specifically on human rights protection
under the UK Human Rights Act 2000, activities could be used in
Australian classrooms to compare the levels of human rights
protection currently available here.
