Project X (OUP)

The books are aimed at school children up to the age of nine

Books illustrated with computer- generated images are the latest attempt to get boys to enjoy reading.

Oxford University Press (OUP) claims the "truly boy-friendly" content and structure of its Project X books will appeal to boys up the age of nine.

The books have been tested in 2,000 schools and can be used interactively through CD-Roms and whiteboards.

But critics dismissed the publications as "ghastly" and a shallow attempt to mimic computer games.

Streamline the process of creating slides for your speaker
Not all of us who work in communications are blessed with a strong design sense—we’re usually good with words, and we leave the design and image creation to the experts. But communications people are eventually called on to create smart, informative and eye-catching slides for an executive presentation—usually under some insanely tight deadline.

For those times when you are pressed into the “slide jockey” role, Nancy Duarte, presentation design maven, offers some advice. Duarte says the task of creating a presentation for someone else is made tougher by the fact that executives believe they are defined by their presentation style.

Terry Pratchett, whose books have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 37 languages, will receive knighthood for his services to literature. Best known for his Discworld fantasy series, the author told the Bookseller, "I'm very grateful and pleased on behalf of the genre, because the fantasy genre lags behind the crime genre in, shall we say, appreciation." He had been awarded an OBE in 1998, and commented on how life imitates art, in that Commander Vimes, from the Discworld series, is also knighted.

Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid is still tops; DC’s Azzarello/Bermejo Joker is #2 and Fables takes the #7 spot.

"The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it."

Author Meg Cabot says it's "bittersweet" to end her Princess Diaries series. But she has more tween books on the way.

'Forever' yours on Tuesday

Meg Cabot tools around Key West on bicycles whose colors — pink, purple and turquoise — match the covers of her popular Princess Diaries series.
A new bike in a new color isn't in Cabot's future; her series about a reluctant teen royal is coming to an end. The last book, Volume X: Forever Princess (HarperTeen, $16.99), goes on sale Tuesday.
